“Consider less invasive procedures for treatment of Disc Herniation and pinched nerves”
Said Dr Elborno, the Medical Director of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Pain Center of Excellence. Dr. Elborno was recently recognized for his outstanding dedication and service excellence and nominated by hospital staff and chosen by the executive team for compassion award, at Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial hospitals.
Most herniated/ bulging discs resolve with conservative management including medications, and PT. If those measures do not work, or if they cause worsening of symptoms, conventional back surgeries may follow with all of their possible risks and complications. They may incur huge cost to the patients and health care system as well. New studies found that minimally invasive procedures may have way fewer risks and complications with less hospital stay and missed work, while they provide relief and improve the quality of life for many patients.
“There are many conservative interventions between medical treatment and conventional invasive surgeries” said Ahmed Elborno, MD. “Epidural steroid injection is one of them”. Epidural steroid injection is a common treatment option that can relieve low back pain/neck pain, and leg/arm pain associated with bulging discs and pinched nerves, by reducing inflammation.
“At times, epidural injection alone is sufficient to provide relief.” Dr. Elborno added.
Nucleoplasty is another minimally invasive procedure that has been used to treat back/neck pain, pinched nerves and sciatic pain. Comparing Nucleoplasty to epidural steroid injection, Dr Elborno shared his experience with us and noted that Nucleoplasty may provide longer-lasting relief than epidural steroid injections.
Dr Elborno stated that conventional back surgeries may be necessary at times, based on thorough neurological evaluation by your specialist, however they may not be the most effective in relieving pinched nerve pain.
It was concluded from recent reports as well from Dr Elborno’s practice that Nucleoplasty ( the minimal invasive procedure) helped so many patients with chronic back / neck pain and pinched nerve pain related to herniated discs.
“ I am glad that we helped so many patients to avoid invasive back surgeries ” Dr. Elborno said.
DR. Elborno, is board certified in Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. He is the Medical Director of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Pain Center of Excellence.
