It is exciting to see more recognition of fibromyalgia, a debilitating chronic pain condition that may include widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. Fibromyalgia affects up to four percent of Americans. It has been underdiagnosed and underestimated by both patients and clinicians.

Diagnosis of fibromyalgia and possible coexistent medical conditions can pose a real challenge. Just as it is important not to underdiagnose fibromyalgia, it is important not to overlook similar medical conditions. In my practice, I have seen many overlooked chronic pain conditions, such as nerve damage conditions, pinched nerves in the neck or back, and arthritis.

I believe that the first step in any chronic pain management is a correct diagnosis. It is the key for effective management.

Recent advancement in fibromyalgia management may brighten the outlook of the nearly six million sufferers.
